Here are some of our favorite sites - interesting, informative, and even useful places we've found on our travels about the web. We hope you like them too.
| Castles on the Web |
This site is the work of Ted Monk, who confesses to a life-long obsession with castles that stems from his boyhood reading of Robin Hood, Black Arrow and the adventures of the Knights of the Round Table. There's tons of information for castle fanciers here, including descriptions and pictures of famous castles, a question and answer page for seekers after obscure castle lore, an extensive glossary of castle terms, and much more. |
| Patrick O'Brian Web Resources |
I owe the most enjoyment I have ever had from books to the nautical novels of Patrick O'Brian, most of which deal with the adventures of Jack Aubrey, a naval officer, and Stephen Maturin, a naval surgeon, naturalist and spy, in the Royal Navy of the early 19th century. The books have many virtues: the stories are thrilling, the characters complex, believable and interesting, and the historical detail phenomenally rich and authentic. Above all, the writing is magnificent: elegant, spare, witty and dramatic by turns, never dull. The best web page I have encountered devoted to O'Brian and his work is this one, by Gibbons Burke, with numerous links relating to the author, his works, and the historical period in which the books are set. |
| Brain games, puzzles and pastimes |
This delightful site is the perfect destination for anyone who enjoys crosswords, trivia, logic puzzles, and other forms of recreation to challenge the mind. Editor Michael Curl has done a superb job of organizing his site, whose features include on-line Java puzzles, freeware and shareware software downloads, and many links to sites of allied interest. If you're a fan of cryptic crossword puzzles, be sure to download the free Across Lite puzzle software and some of Michael's own excellent puzzles. |
